‘The Simpsons’ movie sequel slated for 2027 release

Homer Simpson is heading back to the big screen. Disney has confirmed that a new "Simpsons" feature film will open worldwide on July 23, 2027—two decades after the first movie hit theaters.

The announcement, made via 20th Century Studios' Instagram, teased the sequel with an image of Homer clutching his signature pink sprinkled donut, this time shaped like the number "2." The caption reads, "Homer's coming back for seconds."

Plot details remain tightly under wraps, but the release date now replaces a previously scheduled untitled Marvel slot. The film will open opposite Warner Bros.' animated musical "Bad Fairies."

First aired in 1989, Matt Groening's "The Simpsons" remains the longest-running primetime scripted series in US television history, launching its 37th season on Sunday. The voice cast—Dan Castellaneta (Homer), Julie Kavner (Marge), Nancy Cartwright (Bart) and Yeardley Smith (Lisa)—will once again reprise their iconic roles.

The original 2007 film, directed by David Silverman, became a global phenomenon, earning $536 million at the box office. Its story followed Springfield under siege, sealed inside a dome by the Environmental Protection Agency after one of Homer's blunders.

Critics praised the film for channeling the show's early wit. The Hollywood Reporter called it "caustic, irreverent, constantly amusing… and almost—dare I say—charming."
