Shafik Rehman, the journalist and presenter credited with popularising Valentine's Day in Bangladesh, is now adding a new chapter to his legacy with the introduction of the 'Bhalobasha Padak' (An Award for Love).

Having brought the global celebration of love commercially to the country in 1993, Rehman is now set to mark the 32nd anniversary of its local observance by unveiling an award that celebrates the spirit of love.

The Bhalobasha Padak was officially introduced at a press conference, on World Valentine's Day, at the Sheraton Hotel in Dhaka. The event was a celebration of love itself, with Rehman and his wife, Taleya Rehman, in attendance, sharing their journey with the press.

This initiative is spearheaded by the Valentine's Day Celebration Committee, supported by Jai Jai Din and Istishon Communications. The committee's convener and CEO of Istishon Communications, Rudro Haque, said the event will offer a chance to reflect on the day's growing cultural significance in Bangladesh and provide details about the inaugural Bhalobasha Padak 2025.

At a press conference, it was announced that the Bhalobasha Padak 2025 award ceremony will take place on February 25 at the Sheraton Hotel, Dhaka.

Each year, the Bhalobasha Padak will be awarded to individuals and organisations in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the nation, humanity, life, and nature. In addition, there will be a Lifetime Achievement Award and Special Honours. In the Star Category, celebrities who have set exemplary standards in society will also be honoured with this award. It was emphasised during the event that this initiative is entirely non-political.

Shafik Rehman

Rehman, a media veteran, was instrumental in embedding Valentine's Day into the social fabric of Bangladesh. His vision of celebrating love in all its forms—romantic, familial, or platonic—resonated deeply with the nation's youth and continues to be an annual tradition embraced by millions.
