Barry Keoghan cast in Beatles biopic, says Ringo Starr
Barry Keoghan is stepping into the shoes of legendary drummer Ringo Starr in an upcoming project directed by Sam Mendes, as revealed by Starr himself.
In a recent conversation with Entertainment Tonight, the iconic Beatles drummer confirmed that the Oscar-nominated actor, known for his roles in "The Banshees of Inisherin" and "Saltburn", will depict his character in a series of films about the Beatles.
The 84-year-old musician expressed his approval of the casting, stating, "I think it's wonderful." He then humorously added, "I hear he's already learning the drums, but hopefully he doesn't get too good at it."
Sam Mendes, the acclaimed director behind "American Beauty" and "1917," is set to helm an ambitious quartet of films, each told from the perspective of a different Beatles member.
"It's a privilege to bring the story of the greatest rock band in history to the screen," Mendes shared. "I'm eager to redefine what a cinematic experience can be with this project."
The production has secured the life and music rights of the surviving members of the band and the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison. Despite this collaboration, producer Pippa Harrison emphasised the creative freedom behind the films.
"There are no restrictions, no pressure to deliver a sanitised or official version of their journey," she stated, promising an unfiltered look at their rise to legendary status.
Barry Keoghan first gained attention with his standout roles in "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" and "American Animals," later earning an Oscar nomination for his performance in "The Banshees of Inisherin".
He made his last talked-about appearance in Emerald Fennell's provocative thriller "Saltburn" and has been featured in Andrea Arnold's drama this year titled, "Bird".
Keoghan's upcoming projects include the psychological thriller "Hurry Up Tomorrow," where he stars alongside The Weeknd, and the highly anticipated "Peaky Blinders" film adaptation.
While no casting decisions have been officially confirmed, several high-profile names have been linked to the film series about the Beatles.
"Gladiator II" star Paul Mescal is rumoured to play Paul McCartney. When asked about the speculation, Mescal told GQ, "I'd love to be a part of it, but nothing is finalised yet."
Similarly, "Triangle of Sadness" actor Harris Dickinson has been suggested as a contender for the role of John Lennon. Speaking to Dazed, Dickinson remained tight-lipped, stating, "I can't say much about it. It could be true, or it might just be speculation. Who knows?"
All four films in this upcoming exciting series are slated for release in 2027.
