Bangladeshi Adit Dewan among 12 individuals picked for Dutch film fellowship

Bangladeshi filmmaker Adit Dewan has been selected as one of the 12 young directors and artistes from across the globe to receive the prestigious Moving Narratives Fellowship under the Netherlands-based Prince Claus Fund. With this honour, Dewan is set to receive financial support to bring his next film project to life. While he chose to remain tight-lipped about the specific film for which he was awarded the fellowship, he spoke openly about the importance of the opportunity and how it will impact his journey as a filmmaker.
The Prince Claus Fund, known for supporting young talents in the cultural sector, annually provides funding to promising artistes and creatives, not only filmmakers but also other cultural professionals. This year, Dewan made it among the 12 talented individuals from countries including Egypt, Malaysia, Brazil, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Angola, Thailand, India, Indonesia, Lebanon, South Africa, and Bangladesh, each will get 10,000 euro, all together receiving 120,000 euro fund to support their artistic endeavours.
As part of the selection process, Dewan explained, "First, a project needs to be submitted. There are certain rules, and anyone can submit a project by following them. The organisation reviews portfolios and supports promising artistes and creatives. The project I submitted is the one I am currently working on. However, I can also choose to work on any other project if I wish. That's how I am moving forward."

One of the issues Dewan has faced, like many independent filmmakers, is the lack of proper platforms for the release of short films in Bangladesh. "We see that there are no theatrical shows for short films in the Bangladesh film culture," Dewan pointed out. "At this point, it's quite difficult for short films to reach audiences. However, the rise of OTT platforms and independently organised gallery-based screenings present new opportunities for these films to find an audience."
Dewan's commitment to his craft and cultural identity is evident in his body of work. He has directed five short films, and his most recent project, "Not Only Ant's Story", has garnered critical acclaim. Last year, Dewan received the Curatorial Intensive scholarship and had previously won the Prince Claus Fund's Seed Award.
As Dewan takes the next step in his career, the future looks bright for the young filmmaker, whose commitment to his roots and creative vision is set to leave a lasting impact on both Bangladeshi and global cinema.
