AR Rahman makes acting debut with Prabhu Deva-starrer
Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman is set to step in front of the camera for the first time with the upcoming comedy film "Moonwalk", directed by Manoj N S. The film stars Prabhu Deva in the lead and is scheduled for a theatrical release in May 2026.
While Rahman's career has been marked by several milestones, "Moonwalk" adds a new chapter as it marks his acting debut. Notably, the composer does not appear as himself in the film; instead, he plays a fictional, temperamental film director. Alongside acting, Rahman has also lent his voice to all five songs featured in the film.
Director Manoj N S shared that Rahman's involvement initially began with a special appearance in the song "Mayile", but gradually expanded into a more substantial acting role. According to the director, Rahman readily agreed when offered the extended part, and the atmosphere on set was filled with excitement as the composer explored acting for the first time.
The song "Mayile" is expected to be one of the film's highlights, featuring what Manoj described as one of Prabhu Deva's finest dance performances in recent years. The number has been choreographed by Sekhar Master, with Rahman appearing throughout the sequence, adding what the director called a distinct charm to the visuals.
In "Moonwalk", Prabhu Deva plays Babootty, a young film choreographer, presenting him in a light-hearted and entertaining avatar. Actor Yogi Babu adds to the comedy by portraying three different characters, including one named "Dubai Mathew".
The film also features an ensemble cast comprising Aju Varghese, Arjun Ashokan, Redin Kingsley, Rajendran and Swaminathan, among others.
Billed as a full-length comedy entertainer, "Moonwalk" is already generating interest for bringing together Rahman and Prabhu Deva in an unexpected collaboration, with audiences set to see the legendary composer in a completely new role when the film releases next year.
