Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today said transport fares will be reduced by 1 paisa per kilometre if the government brings down fuel prices by Tk 1 per litre.

The minister came up with the announcement while talking to reporters after a meeting with Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) employees of different circles at its headquarters in the capital, Dhaka.

The BRTA transport fare committee will finalise the rate of fare after the gazette notification over fuel price cut, he said.

Quader said the BRTA again extended the deadline for the registration of digital number plates of all vehicles till June 30. It was extended twice earlier.

He said the government in the new transport law will set the limit of private cars for a family.

The minister said the BRTA mobile court drive will be strengthened to stop the plying of unfit vehicles and charging extra fare from passengers.

The minister said the BRTA mobile court, meanwhile, filed 7,750 cases against vehicles for violating rules, sentenced 301 people to different terms of imprisonment, fined Tk 83.54 lakh and dumped 712 vehicles.
