Student ‘commits suicide’ in M’singh university
A female student of Kazi Nazrul Islam University in Mymensingh’s Trishal is believed to have committed suicide by jumping off a building at campus today.
The victim was Ukra Singh Marma, 19, a first year student of Economics from Khagrachhari’s Manikchhari upazila, our local correspondent reports.
Upon hearing screams, fellow students found her body lying at the base of Arts Building this afternoon in a critical state. She was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Her condition deteriorated in the hospital and she died around 5:00pm, said Md Moniruzaman, officer-in-charge of Trishal Police Station.
Dr Jahidul Kabir, proctor of the university confirmed the death of the girl. “It is not yet clear if this is a case of suicide or accident,” he said. “We are gathering more information.”
Talking to her classmates and other indigenous students, we so far learned that Ukra liked to pass her time alone. Perhaps she could not adjust with the new place, said the proctor.
A seven-member probe body headed by the proctor was formed to investigate the incident this evening, said Dr Humayun Kabir, registrar (in-charge) of the university.
The parents were on their way to the university when last reported.
