Shibir man beaten to death at Jessore college
An Islami Chhatra Shibir activist was beaten to death allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League men this afternoon at MM College in Jessore.
Two other Shibir men were also injured in the incident that took place at Shaheed Asad Hall, a dormitory on campus, sources told The Daily Star.
The dead Habibullah, 22, was a student of economics and the son of Niyamat Ali of Tebaria in Sharsha upazila.
Sikder Akkas Ali, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station claimed that pro-ruling party Chhatra League activists of the college interrogated a number the pro-Jamaat student body men following information that a secret meeting of Shibir was taking place near the college.
"General students gave them a beating and left them near the campus,” the OC said.
On information, police went there and took Habibullah, Kamrul Hasan, 22, and Al-Mamun, 22, to Jessore Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Habibullah dead, the OC claimed.
Kamrul was in a critical condition and sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, hospital sources said.
Police also recovered a homemade bomb and some leaflets on jihad at the spot, the OC said.
However, locals claimed that known Chhatra League activists swooped on a Shibir-controlled students mess around noon and took the three Shibir activists.
They then took them to Asad Hall and started beating them up. When the three were in critical conditions, the Chhatra League men handed them other to police with a bomb, they claimed.
Injured Al Mamun said Chhatra League men attacked them when they were inside their student mess.
Anwar Hossain Bipul, general secretary of Jessore District Chhatra League, said there was no involvement of Chhatra League activists in the incident.
"General student" beat them when they were holding a secret meeting, he added.
Shabuddin, publication secretary of district Jamaat, claimed before journalists that it was Chhatra League men who had killed and injured Shibir activists at Asad Hall after taking them from the students mess.
