Scuffle at Dhaka court between lawyers, staff

A scuffle broke out between court staff and lawyers at Dhaka Sessions Judges Court premises today.

The incident took place around 11:00am, when Magistrate Atikul Islam sent an accused to jail in connection with a vandalism suit and rejected his bail petition.

A lawyer for the accused protested the order and appealed to the court for reconsideration of the bail petition. But the judge rejected the petition and upheld his order.

At one stage of the arguments, some staff of the court assaulted some lawyers and the news soon speared among the other lawyers at the court.

Hundreds of lawyers gathered there and brought out a procession demanding the withdrawal of the concern magistrate and sought exemplary punishment of the staff.

On the other hand, court staff said they will boycott the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court if exemplary punishment is not handed out to the offenders.

Last reported, additional police were deployed on the court premises to avoid unwanted incident.
