A schoolgirl has allegedly committed suicide after “being stalked and harassed by two men” for long in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur.

Shimla Rani Das, 14, an eighth-grader of Rajendrapur High School in Gazipur and daughter of Nityananda Wrishi Das of Kishoreganj’s Bazitpur upazila, was found hanging from a ceiling in her house yesterday afternoon.

The victim along with her family members used to live in a rented house in Satiabari of Sreepur upazila, our Gazipur correspondent reports quoting police and family.

Nityananda told our correspondent that two local youths -- Rajkumar Chandra Moni Das, 30, and Ripon Chandra Moni Das, 27, -- used to harass his daughter Shimla on her way home from school every day and hurl abusive words implicating her with one of her classmates.

On Thursday night, Shimla along with her parents went to a local temple where the duo “teased her with humiliating words”, the victim’s father claimed.

“As she protested the humiliation, they incited her to die,” he said.

Shimla killed herself by hanging from the celling of her room yesterday afternoon when her parents were outside, unable to bear the insult, the victim’s father further said.

“My daughter committed suicide as she could not bear the harassment and stalking by the two men. I want exemplary punishment for them.”

The stalkers, who are easy-bike drivers by profession, went into hiding after the incident, he said.

The victim’s father filed a case against Rajkumar and Ripon with Sreepur Police Station in this connection today.

Al Mamun, assistant superintendent of police (Sreepur-Kaliakoir circle), said police recovered the body and sent it to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Police are trying to arrest the youths, the police official added.
