SC upholds injunction on Kalyanpur slum eviction
The Supreme Court today upheld a High Court order that issued an injunction on eviction of the Kalyanpur Pora Slum in Dhaka.
The apex court also asked the HC to dispose of in four weeks its rule over the legality of the government move to evict the slum dwellers.
A bench led by Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury will dispose of the rule, the court ordered.
The four-member bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the orders after hearing a government petition seeking a stay on the HC order.
Following a petition filed by Ain O Salish Kendra, Coalition for Urban Poor and two slum dwellers, the HC on January 21 issued an injunction restraining the eviction of the slum dwellers.

The government on the same day filed a petition with the SC seeking a stay on the HC order.
While demolishing an illegal market and some slum shanties in Kalyanpur area on January 21, protesters and police threw brick chips and chased each other.
The HC on the same day issued an injunction restraining the eviction of the slum dwellers following a petition filed by Ain O Salish Kendra, Coalition for Urban Poor and two slum dwellers.
Later, the government day filed a petition with the SC seeking a stay on the HC order.
