The Supreme Court today upheld the High Court verdict that confirmed the death sentence of one person, sentenced three others to life imprisonment and acquitted another in sensational Saudi embassy official Khalaf Al Ali murder case.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, who is now carrying out the duties of the chief justice, dismissed the appeals filed by the government and a convict.

The convict, whose death sentence was upheld, is Saiful Islam Mamun and three convicts, who were sentenced to life imprisonment, are Mohammad Al Amin, Rafiqul Islam Khokan and Akbar Ali Lalu. They are all behind the bars while acquitted Selim Chowdhury in on the run.

The jail authorities will start the process for executing the verdict against Saiful Islam Mamun after getting the certified copy of the Supreme Court verdict.

The execution process will be halted if he files a review petition with the Supreme Court against its verdict on him or he seeks presidential mercy.

On November 18, 2013, the High Court, in a major revision to a trial court verdict, acquitted one of the five condemned convicts, awarded life term to three others and upheld the death sentence of one in the case.

An official of the Saudi embassy in Dhaka was shot dead some 30 yards off his house in the city's Gulshan area on March 06, 2012.
