Ctg docs refuse pvt healthcare after raid

Doctors in Chittagong have refused to deliver private healthcare services for “indefinite period” after a mobile court raid found irregularities at three hospitals.

The move announced by private clinics, diagnostic centres and practicing doctors today is likely to throw the people of port city into sufferings, our local staff correspondent reports.

This morning, a mobile court raided Max Hospital, where an infant died due to negligence a few days ago, and three other hospitals and unearthed a long trail of irregularities.

Sarowar Alam, an executive magistrate of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), told The Daily Star, Max Hospital was fined Tk 10 lakh over a variety of irregularities during today’s raid.

According to him, the ICU and pathology department were under-equipped and the nurses were barely matriculation pass and without a proper degree in nursing.

Dr Liakot Ali, director of Max Hospital and general secretary of Bangladesh Private Clinic and Hospital Owners’Association, sat with local unit of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) promptly and came forward with the announcement of service closure.

According to him, Rab has no authority to conduct “raids like this” without a prior notice.

On June 29, Raifa Khan, 3, daughter of Rubel Khan, staff reporter of vernacular daily the Daily Samakal, died due to wrong treatment at the hospital.

Later, an investigation committee was formed the next day with Chittagong Civil Surgeon Azizur Rahman Siddique as its head by the Health Ministry. Two doctors of the hospital Debashish Sengupta and Shuvra Deb were sacked after negligence was found in their treatment
