President seeks support of Singapore to repatriate Rohingyas

President M Abdul Hamid, now in Singapore for his medical checkup, today sought support of the Singapore government to repatriate the forcibly displaced Rohingyas, who took shelter in Bangladesh fleeing violence in Rakhine state of Myanmar.

The President came up with the call when his Singapore counterpart Halimah Yacob talked to him over phone at about 10 am (local time) today to inquire his health condition.

"Both the Presidents exchanged greetings over the telephone," President's Press Secretary M Joynal Abedin told BSS over phone this afternoon.

Halimah Yacob congratulated Abdul Hamid for being reelected as the President of Bangladesh for the second consecutive term.

Terming the existing bilateral relations between the two countries excellent, President Hamid said the relations will increase in the days to come.

About the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Singapore, he hoped that this visit would help reach the existing relations of Bangladesh and Singapore to a new height.

The President also congratulated his Singapore counterpart for being elected as the Singapore's first female president.

Earlier, on Thursday, Abdul Hamid reached Singapore to have his medical checkup. He is scheduled to return home on February 27 next.
