271 children die after abuse in 2018: MJF

At least 271 children lost their lives after they were raped and made victims of sexual and physical abuse in 2018, according to a study conducted by Manusher Jonno Foundation.

Apart from that, 1,006 children were raped and were subjected to attempted abduction and other abuse, the study said.

Manusher Jonno Foundation revealed the findings of the study by analysing reports of six daily newspapers --Prothom Alo, Jugantor, Samakal, Ittefaq, The New Age and The Daily Star -- in 2018.

They revealed the findings at the Jatiya Press Club this afternoon.

One of the most alarming finding is, at least 129 children were abused by their teachers. Among them, around 70 children were physically abused, 33 were sexually abused, 17 were raped. There were seven incidents of attempted rape, one of kidnapping. Another child died by suicide.

Besides, 414 children died in road accidents and 133 were injured in 2018 where as the number of deaths were 376 in 2017.
