Water transport service on 43 routes resumes
Operation of all types of water vessels from Dhaka’s Sadarghat to 43 routes of 22 southern districts resumed nearly two hours after its suspension today.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Public Relations Officer Mobarak Hossain confirmed the latest development to The Daily Star.
“The water vessel service from Sadarghat launch terminal resumed around 12:30pm,” he said.
The BIWTA suspended the launch operation around 10:45am due to the stormy weather, he said.
Meanwhile, the movement of water vessels from Barishal launch terminal to all routes remained suspended since 12:30pm, he informed.
On the other hand, the service on Shimulia-Kathalbari route in the Padma river was suspended for nearly one hour due to the same reason, our Munshiganj correspondent reports.
The water vessel operation on Daulatdia-Paturia route was disrupted for two hours till 10:30am due to the heavy rainfall in Manikganj, reports our correspondent from the district.
However, ferry movement on the route was normal, BIWTA Assistant Managing Director Zillur Rahman said adding that a total of 19 ferries are running on the route to ensure a hassle-free journey for the Eid holidaymakers.
People were seen waiting in a long queue on the Paturia ghat following the two-hour disruption, he said. The rush on the route may increase during the Eid holiday, he added.
