A suspected robbery gang leader was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Sadar upazila of Moulvibazar early today.
The deceased was identified as Bulu Mia, a resident of Osmani Nagar area of Sylhet town, reports our Sylhet correspondent.
Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Moulvibazar Model Police Station, said they got a call through 999 that a gang was committing robbery at Salik Beg Master Bari in Kamlakalas village around 4:00am.
Later, a police team, led by Additional Superintendent of Sylhet Police Ziaur Rahman, rushed to the spot and chased the gang while they were fleeing the area after committing the robbery, said the OC.
"Sensing the presence of the police team, the robbers opened fire on the law enforces, prompting them to retaliate in self-defence," he said.
Bulu got shot during the gunfight and died on the spot, said the police official.
The police team also arrested two members -- Lal Miah (45) and Afzal Miah (48) -- of the robbers' gang from the spot while others managed to flee.
Five policemen were also injured in the gun battle, said the OC, adding that they recovered all the looted goods and valuables from the gang.
