Forest officials in Panchagarh today rescued an Indian peacock from Chaklahat village and are planning to send it to the Ramsagar Jatiya Udyan, a wildlife sanctuary in Dinajpur, instead of sending it back to its natural habitat.

There are, however, no peacocks in the park at present.

When asked why the bird would be taken to the park instead of being released back into the wild, Abdur Rahman, divisional forest officer, said, “We will bring some peacocks from Gazipur Safari Park and keep the rescued bird with those,” he said.

He also said the birds would be kept in a big cage, instead of being set free.

The peacock was rescued earlier today by rickshaw-van puller Bachha Mia. Bacchu told journalists that in the afternoon he saw a dog chasing an unknown animal in a crop field.

Keeping the rickshaw-van on the road, he went to the field and was shocked to see that the animal was a peacock.

He then began trailing it and finally caught it in a pond adjacent to a nearby madrasa.

Later, he brought the animal to his house. As news of the uncommon creature spread, hundreds gathered at Baccha’s house to catch a glimpse of the colourful bird.

On information, forest officials came to the spot and took the animal to Panchagarh forest office.

Md Ruhul Amin, acting in-charge of Panchagarh Social Forestation, Nursery and Training Centre, earlier informed this correspondent that the Indian peacock will be kept in Dinajpur National Park for “conservation”.
