Terming the decision to increase power tariff as 'unjustified', Awami League lawmaker Suranjit Sengupta today called upon the government to reconsider it.

The senior Awami League lawmaker made the call at a discussion meeting at Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh in Dhaka this afternoon, a day after the government decided to increase the prices of power and gas, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

According to the decision, retail customers will have to spend on average 2.93 percent more on electricity and Tk 200 more on gas from this September.

"The matter of concern is that when the fuel price decreases across the world, then you (government) do not reduce the price. When the price rises, then you say you do it for balancing and hiking the price. This is not right," the daily reports quoting Suranjjit.

Meanwhile, announcing a new tariff structure at his office yesterday, AR Khan, chairman of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), said, "We have closely examined the logic behind the hike in gas and power tariffs. We have kept the rise to a minimum level."
