More BRTC buses for Dhaka school goers

More BRTC buses will be introduced on all routes in Dhaka city for better transportation of school students, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader told the parliament today.

Replying to lawmakers' queries, the minister also said the government has prepared the preliminary development project to construct the Dhaka-Mawa-Khulna highway into four lanes depending on the availability of foreign aid.

"The Feasibility Study and Detail Design under Technical Assistance for Sub-Regional Road Transport Project Preparatory Facility (SRTPPF) have been finalised," he said.

Quader also said, the government will upgrade 55-kilometre into four-lanes from Jatrabari to Mawa approach road to the Padma bridge and from there to Bhanga at a cost of Tk 5,000 crore.

The minister informed the House that the 55-kilometre four-lane project from Jatrabari to Bhanga is now waiting for approval, adding, "The construction work would be done by the Bangladesh Army."

24.88 lakh registered vehicles in the country

Reading from a document, Quader said a total of Tk 24.88 lakh vehicles were given registration by Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) to ply on roads across the country as of January. 

The minister also informed the House that a total of 855 registered vehicles are on the road everyday across the country.
