JP observing hartal peacefully in Rangpur

Jatiya Party (JP) is observing a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Rangpur city today protesting an attack on SM Yasir, member secretary of the city unit of JP.

The shut down, effective from 6:00am to 6:00pm today, is being observed peacefully and spontaneously with participation of people from all walks of life, Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa, convener of JP Rangpur city unit, told our Rangpur correspondent.  

No untoward incident had taken place till filing of this report around 11:30am.

JP Rangpur unit earlier made the announcement of shut down at a protest rally on Sunday, January 17, protesting the attack on Yasir, after JP activists brought out a procession and demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the attackers.

Unidentified miscreants hacked Yasir around 3:00pm on Friday, January 15, in Munshipara area of the city while he was returning home on his motorbike. The miscreants fled the scene leaving him critically injured.

Yasir is currently undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

HM Ershad, chairman of JP, visited Yasir on Sunday and expressed his solidarity with the hartal.
