Ex-JCD leader killed, 10 hurt as elephants go on rampage
A Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader was killed while 10 others suffered injuries in two separate incidents of wild elephant attacks in Juri upazila of the district on Tuesday night.
Police recovered the body of Azmal Ali Shamim, 35, former president of JCD, Kulaura upazila unit, yesterday morning and sent it to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Juri Police Station Jahangir Hossain said.
Police said a herd of wild elephants attacked Shamim while he and one of his friends were returning to Kulaura through Sagarnal-Fultala road from Juri and killed him on the spot.
His friend, however, managed to escape the elephant's attack and flee the scene.
Meanwhile, 10 people were hurt when their vehicles came under elephant attack on Gazipur-Sagarnal road the same night, Assistant Forest Officer, Kulaura Range, Riaz Uddin said.
The incident occurred when two wild elephants intercepted three vehicles carrying passengers to Juri and went on a rampage around 9:00pm.
The passengers, who sustained injuries while trying to get down from their vehicles hurriedly, took treatment at Kulaura Upazila Health Complex.
