The Supreme Court today directed a trial court to finish by six months the trial proceedings of the murder case of Phulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haque.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order after hearing a government petition against a High Court order that granted bail to an accused of the case Jahangir Kabir Adel.

The SC also scrapped the HC order that granted bail to Adel in this case.

Deputy Attorney General Khondker Diliruzzaman told The Daily Star that Ekramul Haque, the chairman of Phulgazi upazila in Feni was killed on May 20, 2014.

The HC on January 16 last year granted bail to local Awami League leader Adel in this case.

The government then filed a petition with the SC seeking stay on the HC order.

Chamber judge of the SC stayed the HC order following the government petition. The Appellate Division bench today confirmed the chamber judge's order, he said.

Adel cannot get released from jail until the lower court disposes of the case, Diliruzzaman said.
