6.5 lakh manpower exported in 2015

Bangladesh exports about six and a half lakh people this year in manpower that included some positive trends in the business, report says.

Bangladesh exported about six and a half lakh people this year in manpower that included some positive trends in the business, a report said today.

The remittance inflow, that surged to $15 billion this year, was mentioned "dissatisfactory" in comparison to the rise in manpower export, it read.

Approximately five and half a lakh men were sent as manpower this year – a 30 percent rise as compared to last year. For women it was 95,000 – a 19 percent rise.

Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) published the report "Pattern and Trends of Labour Migration 2015: Achievement and Challenge" at Jatiya Press Club.

The statistics were based on the information collected from January to December this year.

Remittance rose by 1.8 percent compared to last year, it is not satisfactory against the increase in manpower export, said Prof Tasneem Siddique, founding chairman of RMMRU.

He described the opportunities to Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and Kuwait for males as "positive trends" in the business. He cited UAE market as a concern as its market is currently closed for Bangladesh.

The professor also showed concerns on "government's lack of commitment" in curbing the human trafficking trend across the seas.

"Also not much progress was made to protect women who are sent overseas," he added.
