57% child labourers victims of physical torture: Study
Fifty-seven percent child labourers are found to be victims of physical torture, according to a study.
The study conducted by The Nielsen Company (Bangladesh Ltd) on behalf of Family Planning Association of Bangladesh shows 66 percent domestic workers were victims of mental torture whilst seven percent were victims of rape.
The study titled 'Child Labour Situation in Informal Sector of Bangladesh' was presented today by ASM Amanullah, a professor of Dhaka University, at the capital's CIRDAP auditorium around 11:00am.
A total of 600 child labourers working in the informal sectors of Dhaka, Chittagong and Khulna were surveyed, Prof Amanullah said.
The study found that 35% of the child labourers do not get access to proper food and drinking water while 22% were working in hazardous conditions.
The study further revealed that 52% child workers were aged between 15-18yrs, 44% were 10-14 and 4% were 5-9 years of age.
