Man mistakenly imprisoned gets bail
A victim, Nurul Islam from Sylhet, who was in jail for more than two years in place of his younger brother in a sensational murder case, got bail from the High Court today.
Nurul Islam’s younger brother Nazrul Islam alias Nunu Moulavi, who is the actual accused, has been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court in Madrasa student Nazrul Islam alias Dina murder case.
The HC bench of Justice Abu Bakar Siddiquee and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam today granted bail to Nurul Islam, now 56, for next six months following an appeal filed by him seeking bail in the case, Nurul’s lawyer Mohammad Aftab Uddin told The Daily Star.
He said Nurul Islam has been suffering in jail since March 18, 2014 due to a mistake committed by the police.
He said Nurul’s younger brother Nazrul Islam alias Nunu Moulavi, who is an original accused of the case, is now absconding.
The investigation officer of the case has written the name of Nazrul Islam as Nunu Moulavi Nurul Islam in the case.
The police arrested Nurul Islam on March 18, 2014 in place of Nazrul Islam alias Nunu Moulavi, as Nurul Islam told police that his name is Nurul Islam, he said.
Madrasa student Nazrul Islam, son of Abdus Salam alias Selaiya Miah of Mewa village under Bianibazar upazila in Sylhet was killed in 1992, Advocate Aftab Uddin said.
A Sylhet court in 1999 sentenced accused Nunu Moulavi, Abdus Jalil, Abdur Rahman alias Sad, Abdus Sahid, Enam Uddin, Khalilur and Nizam Uddin to life imprisonment in the case.
Nunu Moulavi and Enam are now absconding, the lawyer added.
