Class XI admission based on GPA questioned
The High Court today questioned the legality of class XI admission policy which allows institutions to enroll students on the basis of Grade Point Average (GPA).
The court issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the government to explain why the admission policy should not be declared illegal.
The HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Choudhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque came up with the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond challenging the legality of the admission policy.
In the petition, he said the education system has been running under the Secondary and Higher Secretary Ordinance 1961. In the ordinance, there is no rule that the education board will determine the serial of the admission seekers on the basis of GPA, he said.
He also said the education board’s duty is to hold examination of the students and they cannot formulate any admission policy. Therefore, the class XI admission policy is contradictory with the ordinance, he added.
About 80.35 percent students passed Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent tests this year. The process for Class XI admission started on May 9 and will continue till May 26.
