6 relief seekers go missing after boat capsizes in Jamuna
Six people remain missing after a boat carrying them capsized in Jamuna river in Dewanganj upazila of Jamalpur last night.
The accident took place near Futanibazar ghat around 9:30pm when 29 flood-affected people including children were returning after receiving relief materials, Mainul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Dewanganj Police Station.
They are residents of Tinerchar and Charhalka Hawrabari villages in the upazila, the OC said.
Soon after the incident, divers of fire brigades with the help of local people rescued 16 people, he said.
The fire service continued the rescue operation till 1:00am today, our Jamalpur correspondent reports quoting the police official.
This morning, local people resumed the rescue operation and managed to rescue seven more missing people from the river.
Among the rescued people, Mamata, 7, is now under treatment at Sariakandi Upazila Health Complex, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bahadurabad Naval Police Station in Jamalpur.
But six other people remain missing when the report was filed around 3:00pm.
