Indictment order against 8 Jamalpur ‘Al-Badr’ men Oct 26

A tribunal in Dhaka today fixed October 26 to decide whether it will frame charges against eight Jamalpur "Al-Badr" members for their alleged involvement in crimes committed during the Liberation War in 1971.

The three-member tribunal of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 led by Justice Anwarul Haque fixed the date after both the prosecution and the defence counsels placed their submission.

The accused are: Ashraf Hossain, Prof Sharif Ahmed, Abdul Mannan, Abdul Bari, Harun, Abul Hashem, Shamsul Haque and AKM Yusuf Ali. Six of them -- Ashraf, Sharif, Mannan, Bari, Harun, and Hashem -- are on the run.

On April 20, the prosecution pressed five charges against the "Al-Badr men" for their alleged involvement in crimes committed in Jamalpur during the 1971 Liberation War.

Meanwhile, the tribunal today sent an alleged war criminal to jail after police produced him before it around 1:00pm.

Md Abdul Kuddus, 84, who hails from Laxminarayanpur in Shudharam upazila of Noakhali but currently living in Dhaka's Lalbagh, was arrested yesterday, Prosecutor Zahid Imam told The Daily Star.

On Monday, the tribunal issued an arrest warrant against Kuddus and four other alleged war criminals from Shudhram following a prosecution petition.

Among the four, Amir Ahmad alias Razakar Amir Ali, 70, Md Joynal Abedin, 73, and Mohammad Yusuf, 60,  were arrested on Monday while Abul Kalam alias AKM Mansur, 67, of Nandanpur in the same upazila is still on run.
