Govt now moving for handset registration
The government will be moving for cellphone or mobile handset registration across the country for what is said “foolproof security” measures.
“Proper registration of SIM cards (Subscriber Identity Module) gives us half the security,” said State Minister for Post and Telecommunications Tarana Halim.
“Handset registration will give us foolproof security,” she told a roundtable discussion focused on the role of mobile devices in national security today.
The move is coming after the government carried out re-registration process for existing SIM cards and introduced biometric registration process for new SIM cards.
The handsets will be registered using the unique International Mobile Station Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers that come with each cellphone.
The cellphone registration will begin after April, by the time when mobile SIM registration will come under a process, Tarana Halim told the roundtable.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Shahajan Mahmood said authorities will introduce cross verification for registration process.
No further details were mentioned in the programme arranged by Telecom Reporters’ Network Bangladesh (TRNB).
