A leader of Chittagong city unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), a front organisation of the ruling Awami League, was beaten to death in Chittagong this morning.

Sudipto Biswas, 28, was a former Masters student of Mathematics department at Government City College in Chittagong.

He was killed allegedly by some of his fellow activists, said Marzina Akhter, officer in-charge (OC) of the city’s Shadarghat Police Station, told our correspondent.

The killing incident might have taken place due to the party’s internal conflicts or personal rivalry, the OC said.

Sudipto came out of his house at south Nalapara in the city around 8:00am, when some people went to his house and took him with them. A few hours later he was found severe injured in the area, police said.

Locals took him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 11:00am.

Imran Ahmed Emu and Nurul Azim Rony, president and joint secretary of Chittagong city BCL unit, told our Chittagong correspondent that they were aware of the incident and demanded punishment of the culprits.

Meanwhile, activists of a faction of Chittagong city unit of BCL carried out vandalism and arson at New Market area of the city protesting the killing of Sudipto Biswas.

Confirming the incident to have taken place, Jahangir Alam, assistant commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), said that a group of students of Government City College in Chittagong carried out the demonstration and vandalised several private cars and set two public buses on fire around 4:00pm.

The law enforcers later took the situation under control, he also said, adding that no one has been detained in this connection yet.
