Contempt rule against Janakantha editor, journo

The apex court today issued a contempt rule against the editor and a journalist of The Daily Janakantha over an article published on Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha issued the suo moto (on its own) rule after the verdict of SQ Chowdhury.

The court ordered them to appear before it on August 3 and explain why contempt of court proceedings should not be brought against them for publishing an article on July 16.

The daily's editor and publisher Atiqullah Khan Masud and its journalist Swadesh Roy will have to appear before the court by 9:00am on that day and offer their explanations.

Later, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told reporters at a press briefing that the report questioned the image and magistracy of the judiciary and created disappointment among the people.

SC ASKS PARTICULARS ON IMRAN H SARKER

Also, the Supreme Court asked the attorney general to provide the particulars of Imran H Sarker, spokesman of a Gonojagoron Mancha faction that demands death for war criminals.

Mahbubey Alam said Sarker's comments about the court led the top court to inquire about his particulars.
