Body formed to monitor SIM re-registration system
The government today formed a two-member committee to monitor the biometric system of mobile phone SIM re-registration following some anomalies found in the system, said the state minister for post and telecommunication.
The committee members can now fine six mobile operators if they find any anomalies in the SIM (Subscriber identity modul) re-registration system, Tarana Halim said while talking to reporters at a meeting with Telecom Reporters Network at the Secretariat.
“I found many irregularities such as the lack of biometric machine and harassment of customers while visiting many registration centres in the city. So, the committee has been formed to supervise the system,” she added.
The members are: Brig Gen Emdad ul Bari, director general of BTRC's systems and services department; and Brig General Sayekh, a senior official of National Telecom Monitoring Centre.
The six mobile phone operators began recording biometrics, such as fingerprints, for SIM card verification and re-registration through a pilot project across the country from November 1 last year.
The biometric SIM registration will continue till April this year.
