Oust Sufia Kamal hall provost: Quota reformists
Quota reformists today protested the “throwing out” of female students at Dhaka University’s Sufia Kamal Hall and demanded immediate removal of the hall’s provost.
“Ousting the students from the residential hall at midnight shows the moral degradation of the provost,” said Nurul Huq, joint convener of Bangladesh Shadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad.
He was speaking after a protest rally at Dhaka University campus, in participation of about two hundred, brought out in condemnation of the Sufia Kamal Hall incident.
Nur termed the move a tool to instill panic among the students who took part in the agitation earlier this month demanding a fundamental reform to the quota system in government service.
They urged the DU authorities to remove hall Provost Prof Sabita Rizwana immediately; or otherwise threatened to take to the streets again along with the general students.
Mohammad Rashed Khan, another joint convener of the platform, said: “Those who took part in the movement are getting death threats and conspiracies are being hatched against them.”
He also urged the authorities to bring back the students to the hall with dignity.
PROTESTS AT JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY
Meanwhile, the reformists’ Jahangirnagar University chapter also brought out a protest in their campus this afternoon echoing similar demand.
Their procession started from the university’s central library area around 5:00pm and paraded different key points of the campus, our campus correspondent reports.
Abu Sayed, coordinator of Bangladesh Shadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad JU unit said, “We firmly protest the harassment of the female students of Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall.” He also hinted tougher movement if anyone of the agitators is subjected to harassment by the administration.
