8 hurt in Ruet BCL fight

At least eight students of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) were injured in a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League at Shaheed Abdul Hamid Hall early Friday.

Supporters of BCL Ruet unit president Nayeem Rahman Nibir and general secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Tapu locked into the fight around 11.30pm over establishing their supremacy on the campus, said Shahadat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station.

Three bombs were exploded during the fight, leaving the eight students injured, said Shafiqul Islam Shafi, sub-inspector and also in-charge of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) police outpost.

On information, police rushed to the hall around 12:15am on Friday and brought the situation under control, said the OC.

Meanwhile, BCL central committee suspended its Ruet unit and issued a show-cause notice against its president Nayeem and general secretary Tapu.

Additional police have been deployed on the campus to fend off further trouble.
