A court in Rangpur today sent former Vice-Chancellor and an incumbent deputy registrar of Begum Rokeya University to jail in a corruption case.

Former BRU VC Prof Abdul Jalil Miah and incumbent Deputy Registrar Shahjahan Ali Mondal were sent to jail this afternoon in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission in 2015, reports our local correspondent.

Humayun Kabir of Senior Special Judge Court of Rangpur rejected their bail petitions and directed police to send them to jail after they appeared before the court seeking bail.

According to the case statement, the accused had appointed 349 officials in exchange of money without the approval of University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2013.

The court also issued an arrest warrant against three officials -- deputy directors ATM Golam Firoz (planning and development), Khandakar Ashraful Alam (finance and accounts) and assistant registrar Morshedul Alam Rony -- for skipping the today’s court hearing, said Mozahar Ali, ACC deputy director in Rangpur.

Earlier, the anti-graft body of Rangpur filed a charge sheet accusing the five officials before the court on March 19 this year.
