4 journos beaten up by ‘BCL men’ in Sylhet
Four journalists were beaten up allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists on Murari Chand College campus in Sylhet during a clash between two factions of the pro-Awami League front this afternoon.
The journalists -- Yousuf Ali of Dainik Samakal, Asmit Nandy Mazumder Aovi of Dainik Bhorer Kagoj, Mithu Das Joy of Dainik Shuvo Pratidin and Kawser Ahmed of a local online portal – came under the attack when they tried to take pictures of the clash.
During the Bashanto Utshab programme organised by Mohona, a cultural organisation of the college, the two fractions of BCL logged into the clash over the sitting arrangement for the BCL leaders.
Asmit Nandy said, “The BCL activists logged into a clash around 12noon and then suddenly started beating us with bare hand when we tried to capture photographs of the clash.”
There is no BCL committee in the college and the correspondent could not reach to any leaders for their comments.
Akhter Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shahporan Police Station, said, “So far, no one is injured during the clash, Police brought the situation under control and additional police have been enforced in the college to avoid further untoward incidents.”
“I am not sure about the attack on journalists but we will look into the matter”, the OC said.
