100 RMG workers fall sick ‘drinking water’ at factory

One-hundred workers of a garments factory had to take treatment at the hospital today after drinking water from the factory canteen.

The sick workers were from a factory at Konabari in Gazipur.

Sub-Inspector Mobarak Hossain of Konabari Police Outpost told our Gazipur correspondent that many workers of the factory fell sick around 11:30am. Authorities later sent them to different local hospitals and clinics.

Anowar Hossain, a worker of the factory, claimed that the workers fell sick around one and a half hour after drinking water at the canteen.

Sample of water from the canteen has been sent to a laboratory in Dhaka, the SI said, adding that the factory authorities have suspended production for today.

Confirming the incident, Dr Babul Ahmed Sharif of Konabari Sharif General Hospital said around 100 workers of the factory came to his hospital around 11:45am after they fell sick.
