1 killed in AL infighting over UP polls in Jhenidah

A local Awami League activist was killed and 10 others were injured in a clash between two rival groups of the ruling party today over their nominations for chairman post of Padmakor union in Jhenidah Sadar upazila.

The deceased Akamat Meer, 51, was resident of Soyael village in the upazila, our Jhenidah correspondent reports quoting Hasan Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station.

Of the injured, four are undergoing treatment at Jhenidah Sadar Hospital while others took primary treatment.

Awami League-backed chairman candidates Nizamul Goni Litu and Bikash Chandra Biswas, incumbent chairman of Padmakor union parishad, had been at loggerheads over having nomination for the fourth phase union polls in the area scheduled to be held on May 7, said OC Hafizur.

As a sequel to the enmity, supporters of both the groups locked in an altercation around 8:00am today.

At one stage, they equipped with sharp weapons and sticks attacked each other, leaving 11 people, including Akamir, a supporter of Bikash Chandra, injured.

The injured people were rushed to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital where doctors declared Akamat dead.

Additional police were deployed there to avoid further clash.
