ASI suspended, 4 constables closed
An assistant sub-inspector of police was suspended and four constables were closed, on charges of harassing a young woman at a checkpoint in the capital's Rampura.
ASI Iqbal Hossain of Rampura Police Station led the five-member checkpost in front of Rampura TV station around 2:30am on Tuesday, police said.
Sohel Rana, an assistant inspector general (Media) of police headquarters, said Assistant Superintendent of Khilgaon zone police Nadia Jui have been tasked with investigating the incident.
Departmental action will be taken against them as per the probe report, he said.
A video showing on-duty policemen harassing a woman travelling alone in an auto-rickshaw late at night, went viral on social media, triggering outrage.
Such behaviour of policemen, who are responsible for citizen's safety and security, is unacceptable, rights body Ain o Salish Kendra said in a press statement.
Another statement by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad president Ayesha Khanam and General Secretary Maleka Banu demanded punishment for the involved policemen through proper investigation, and ensuring safety and security to the woman and her family.
