The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) today demanded the government formulates a guideline for the recruitment of judges to the Appellate Division and High Court (HC) division of the Supreme Court.

“There is no alternative to formulate a guideline for SC judges’ appointment in order to ensure transparency and neutrality,” SCBA President Advocate Joynul Abedin said at a press conference organised by the SCBA at its auditorium.

Advocate Joynul further said, “We hear that the government is attempting to appoint new judges to the Appellate and HC divisions. The government does not say anything in this regard despite repeated request from the SCBA,” he said.

In this situation, the SCBA is demanding formulation of the guideline in line with the Article 95 (2) of the Constitution and the HC judgement for appointing SC judges in order to establish rule of law and ensure the independence of the judiciary, he said.

He also demanded appointment of the judges beyond any politicisation for upholding the dignity of the judiciary.

SCBA Secretary AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon said they would enforce movement against the government if it appoints SC judges on political consideration.
