Rain came too late! (video)

It has been raining in Dhaka since Saturday. Sometimes rains came down heavier after slight relapses. But had it come a little earlier today, many of a Merul Badda slum might not lost their belongings in a devastating fire.

Over two hundred tin-roofed shanties were gutted in the fire that continued for one and a half hours starting at 12:55pm.

Fire fighters from 16 units rushed to the scene immediately and managed to bring the fire under control at 1:55pm, Abdul Halim, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence of Dhaka, told The Daily Star.

Just after the firefighters brought the fire under control, a heavy downpour began.

Had the rain come half an hour ago, the fire that originated from cylinder blast in a Fuska shop, could not damage everything, lamented Anwara Begum , who lost her one-room house and everything she had there in the devastating fire.

Standing amid the heavy shower at 2:45pm, she was weeping over the loss of all her belongings.

None was reported to be injured in the fire as most of the shanties were under lock and key as the residents were away on Eid holidays or attending their works.

But all the households and some small farms like a pigeon shop were gutted in the fire.
