City polls: Restriction on motorbike, vehicular movement

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) slapped a restriction on motorcycle movement from 12:01am on Sunday to 6:00am on Wednesday as part of security measures for the bifurcated Dhaka city corporation elections.

All types of vehicular movement will be banned in the capital city for 24 hours starting from 12:01am on April 28.

The DMP also banned carrying of firearms from April 25 to May 1. Legal steps under the Arms Act will be taken against those defying this rule.

Rally, procession, programmes will remain banned from April 26 to April 30.

No candidates will be allowed to set up a camp within 400 yards of a polling centre.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah, however, today termed the voting centres as 'important' and 'general' and announced a more security arrangement for the important voting centres than the general ones.

Out of the total 1982 polling centres in the two city corporation areas, 1429 have been declared 'important', said the DMP boss unveiling the security plan for holding the elections peacefully on April 28.

The DMP boss said in every 'important' police centre 12 law enforcers equipped with firearms and another 12 police and Ansar members armed with batons will deploy during the voting.
