Missing ex-ambassador returns home after 15 months
Former Bangladesh ambassador to Vietnam Maroof Zaman returned his home last night over 15 months after he went missing on his way to Dhaka airport in December 2017.
“After 15 and a half months, or 467 days... my father is back,” said Shabnam Zaman, a daughter of the 62-year-old ambassador on her Facebook page this evening.
Abdul Latif, officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station, said a police team was sent to his Dhanmondi house after knowing about his return.
“My sister and I are both profoundly grateful to those individuals who have supported us throughout this period. We would now like to request privacy so that we can process and heal. We have no further comments or details to share at this time,” she added in the post.
Maroof went missing after he left his Dhanmondi home in his private car to pick up his daughter from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on December 4, 2017. His daughter was scheduled to land at the airport at 7:30pm on that day.
After landing at the airport, Samiha Zaman, another daughter of the former ambassador called her father but found his mobile unreachable. She then called her uncle Rifat Zaman and informed him that she could not reach her father over the phone. Rifat then rushed to the airport and brought her home.
Samiha lodged a general diary with Dhanmondi police on December 5, 2017. Later on the day, police found Maroof's car (Dhaka Metro Ga-21-1399) left abandoned in Khilkhet area, close to the airport.
Maroof Zaman retired as an additional secretary at the foreign ministry in September 2009. He also served as the deputy high commissioner in the UK.
