One of the three family members, who suffered severe burns in an explosion in their household gas pipeline at Wari yesterday, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital early today.

Alamgir Hossain, 50, succumbed to his injuries at the burn unit around 2:00am, said Mozammel Haque, in-charge of DMCH police camp.

Yesterday, Alamgir, his wife Hosne Ara Begum, 45, and daughter Shamrin Alam, 20, were burnt in a fire that broke out due to blast of the gas pipeline at their house and were admitted at DMCH burn unit in critical condition.

Alamgir sustained 95 percent burns, Hosne Ara 40 percent and Shamrin 30 percent.

Quoting Shamrin, her uncle Abdus Sattar told The Daily Star that Hosne Ara went to their kitchen around 12:30am to boil milk. Just as she lighted a matchstick to fire up the gas stove, the room exploded with a loud bang and a huge fireball engulfed the house instantly.

Locals doused the flames immediately and rushed the three victims to the hospital.

Tapan Chandra Shaha, officer-in-charge of Wari Police Station, yesterday said gas leaked from what appeared to be a faulty pipeline accumulated inside the house and exploded the moment it came in contact with the matchstick flame.

The impact of the explosion caused a wall of a nearby flat to fall on another adjacent tin-shed building, causing minor injuries to four others, he said.
