Dhaka raid militant Rouf missing ‘NSU student’

Confusion over one
According to family and police, this militant killed during Dhaka raid in Kalyanpur is Shahzad Rouf Arko, an MBA student of North South University who was missing since February 2016.

US passport holder and allegedly a student of privately-run North South University, Shahzad Rouf Arko has been identified as one of the militants killed in Dhaka raid.

- 1 of the 9 militants identified

- Confusion over claim of 1 militant

With help of family, Rouf was identified as son of Touhid Rouf, a resident of Dhaka’s Bashundhara, Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told the media.

According to the police official, Rouf was an MBA student of North South University.

Previous The Daily Star report shows Shahzad Rouf, an American passport holder, went missing on February 3 and his father Touhid Rouf filed a GD three days later with Bhatara Police Station.

But confusion rose over the identity of another militant after families of one Jubair Hasan and Sabbir Huq Konik claimed the same body of their dear one.

Nine alleged militants were killed yesterday during a special drive of the joint forces in Kalyanpur, ending an overnight standoff that ensued with a raid to hunt down “militant den”.

Thirteen locally made grenades, around five kilogrammes of gel, 19 detonators, four 7.62mm pistols, seven magazines of 7.62mm pistols, 22 bullets, three commando knives and 12 guerrilla knives and two black flags with Arabic letters were found.

Though the detainee claimed he was a militant of the Islamic State, Bangladesh’s police chief said the terrorists belonged to banned Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

It was said that these militants had a lot in common with those terrorists who attacked Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka’s diplomatic zone on July 1 and Sholakia Eidgah on Eid day.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina lauded the effort of the law enforcers and intelligence agencies and said that swift actions helped save the country from a major disaster.
