Three persons died and several others were injured when a bus crushed a human hauler in Mirpur’s Diabari today, adding to the tally of deaths owing to unruly transport sector.

Two of those killed were identified as Yasin Shuvo, 24, a student of engineering at Manarat International University, and Shibli Sadik, 27, a computer engineering graduate of North South University.

The other victim, a six-year-old girl, could not be identified until last reported, according to what AB Siddique, officer-in-charge of Shah Ali Police Station, told The Daily Star.

They were all pronounced dead after being taken to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. While two victims were attending treatment there, four have been referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

According to what could be gathered, a bus of ‘Mohona Paribahan’ coming in from Birulia, Savar, crushed the human hauler causing the casualties around 2:00pm.

Yasmin Begum, mother of Shuvo, said her son, her “only hope”, was returning from university campus this afternoon. “My son used to tell me that he would helm the family once he graduates… now who will shoulder the responsibility of my family?”

Last month, the transport sector, came under severe criticism as the deaths of Titumir College Student Rajib Hossain and domestic help Rozina Akhter Rozi shook the nation with the awakening to unruliness of the sector in Dhaka city.

House help Rozi was run over by a state-run BRTC bus in Banani and died on April 29. Orphan and guardian of two siblings Rajib died on April 26 after his hand was severed between two buses.

Earlier this month on May 4, a pick-up van ran over a teenager in Dhaka’s Arambag.
