RMG workers stage demo at Karwan Bazar protesting factory closure
A group of workers of a recently shut readymade garment factory in Gazipur staged a demonstration in Karwan Bazar of Dhaka today demanding their due salaries and allowances.
The workers also demanded resuming of the factory activities which was shut by its owners on October 30. Nearly 1100 workers used to work in the factory.
They said that the factory owners shut the factory without paying their salaries which remain due since September.
Over 150 workers of Lakhsma Sweaters Limited located in Gazipur took part in a sit-in programme in front Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) around 12:00pm, reports our staff correspondent from the spot.
The DIFE is responsible for ensuring welfare, safety and health of valuable human resources working in various sectors contributing national development.
Following an earlier meeting between workers and owners at the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) building, the factory owners assured to pay the arrears but later it deferred two times till November 30 to pay the dues.
DIFE joint inspector general Shamsul Alam Khan told The Daily Star that they will hold a meeting tomorrow with the factory owners and workers to solve the problem.
However, the demonstration was going on till filing of this report around 2:30pm.
