Against the backdrop of the recent tension along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, a four-day summit between the two border forces begins in Dhaka today with an aim to improve the border security situation.

An 11-member team led by Police Brigadier General Myo Than, chief of police general staff of Myanmar, have joined the summit that began around 9:30am at Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters at Pilkhana, according to a press release by BGB.

On the other hand, the 15-member BGB delegation was led by Brig Gen Md Anisur Rahman, BGBM, ndc, additional director general of BGB, says the release.

Apart from high officials of BGB, high officials of home and foreign ministries and Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) of Bangladesh will join the talks.

Bangladesh and Myanmar share a 271km border.

BGB is expected to discuss several issues like preventing inflow of illegal drugs, exchange of fire at the border, illegal entry of Myanmar nationals into Bangladesh, Repatriation of those stuck after crossing the border and various steps to develop trust and cooperation between the two forces.

A "Joint Record of Discussions" will be signed on July 12, the release said.
