A pigeon lovers’ paradise

If you are a bird lover, the pigeon market in Nayabati of Khulna's Khalishpur is the place for you. Every Friday, thousands of bird lovers from across the country gather in this informal marketplace to buy and sell a variety of pigeons -- Siraji, Lakha, Soya Chandan, King, Golden Sweet, Jacobin, Homer, House Pager, Kotabal and many more. Vendors sit in rows on both sides of a road near the Nayabati Gol Chattar and sell pigeons and other birds in cages. They say the price of a bird can go up to Tk 1 lakh depending on the breed. Different breeds of pets-- rabbits, guinea pigs, cats, dogs, fish, turtles and other animals -- are also available here. In addition, one can find all kinds of pet items including cages, feed, and aquariums here. The photos were taken recently.
